Collection of groups of various bookplates used by the Library of the Metropolitan Museum of Art between the period 1873-1879, when the Museum was housed in the Cruger (Douglas) Mansion, and the mid-twentieth century. Each group of plates indicates the source of the book fund, and some groups include the date when an endowment fund was established. Many of the plates are ornamented and some include a vignette of the Museum building.

Janet S. Byrne was a curator in the Department of Prints at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. During her 47-year career at the Museum, she developed a picture file of bookbindings and their descriptions that was rediscovered in the fall of 1993 when the Department of Drawings and Prints was preparing a survey of British illustrated books.
